Theories & Urbanism [ARC 61303]
Thematic inquiry into architectural theory in the broader context of philosophical schools of thought and cultural and social conditions, which includes modernism, postmodernism, phenomenology, semiotics, post-structuralism, and deconstruction. These themes will guide the organization of weekly lecture and seminar sessions, which will proceed from the establishment of a basic theoretical apparatus to the examination of specific cases. These will supply us with tools for the analysis of specific architectural situations. Students will develop a written synopsis of a designated reading, an oral seminar presentation of a specific discussion in relation to the designated reading, and an in-depth and analytical research paper on the designated topic.

Project 1
Synopsis:
Interpreting Architecture
Aims to expose students to the recent and more complex building technologies including basement construction, and methods of documentation. In this project students will be required to modify their previous semester’s design project to adopt different, more recent and complex construction systems that suits the local context, facilitated by appropriate precedent studies. In addition students should also provide detail description of all the construction systems used as well as analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of the systems proposed. All the findings shall be reported in appropriate academic report writing format and accordingly a set of working drawings should be produced.

PROJECT 2
PROJECT PART I: ANALYSING SELF
Part 1 of the project is to provide information on the architect in order to comprehend personal attributes that contribute to the construction of architectural theory. This is taking account the fact that “the way in which people organize their place is related to their beliefs and their aspirations, their world view.”(Unwin, 2002)
TASK:
Stage 1: To gather information on the architect and his/her works (Group of 3)
a) Biodata
b) List of work + pictures + address
c) List of references
TASK:
Stage 2: To Analyse ''Self” (Individual)
WORKING EXPERIENCE

PROJECT PART II: ANALYZING AND THEORIZING ARCHITECTURE
Part 2 of the project emphasises architecture is like language with vocabulary, grammatical structure; both physical and intellectual.
Through certain arrangement, it carries messages and communicates meanings. Nevertheless, in order to understand architecture, one
must be aware of the conditions within which they are employed.
TASK:

a) External contributing factors (min 4)
b) Analysis diagrams (plan, section, elevation)

Stage 4: To theorize architecture based on analysis of self & architecture
